Reaons why I'll never have surgery at OHSU
I hope that the spotlight that the Tram brouhaha catches in the shadows several other "issues" related to OHSU's enterprises. Keeping it short, here are the reasons I will never have major surgery at OHSU.
- Even if I spend time and effort searching out the right, board certified doctor, there is some large probability that some 20-30 year old resident will do most of the work. Remember OHSU is a teaching hospital. (Do you get a price discount? Who knows and, with insurance, who cares?)
- OHSU does not have to report any malpractice claims against it or its "agents." This is a great way to shield incompetence and/or negligence. Private hospitals must report to the state any malpractice claims against it.
- If the doctor/resident messes up, the absolute most you can collect from OHSU or its "agents" is $500,000 (and maybe less). Ask KATU anchor Ken Ackerman if that is enough to compensate for spending the rest of his life in a wheelchair.
- The Tram and other SoWa expenses add to the enterprise's cost structure. The only result can be either (a) increased costs of care, and/or (b) decreased quality of care.
Bottom line: If you have major surgery stay away from anything (doctor, facilities, etc.) that has even whiff of OHSU. Even a slight affiliation can turn into a big shield if dollars are on the line.

I encountered two of OHSU's mediocre surgeons and thanks to them, became inoperable. As a state institution, Portland's Oregon Health and Sciences University has been nearly exempt from liability. The law made them less responsible. Their operating costs were less than their competitors. They could be the lowest bidder. They became the $99.00 paint job. After encountering their surgeons Matthew Slater and Mithran Sukumar, I became inoperatable.
My new blog is at http://ohsu-malpractice.blogspot.com/2006/08/malpractice-at-oregon-health-and.html
I have a new,more inclusive website, www.ohsuaccountability.com

Dear Bob, smoked yourself to death did you ? now you're looking for someone else to foist your frustration on.What you need is a shrink ...a darned good one who is well insured.
The fact is OHSU has nothing to do with our past as we seek medical help.
My son 10 yrs old had surgery for chiari Malformation and I regret allowing Dr selden perform surgery on him. This hospital in a whole has life time damaged my child.
Those who take oath to help and heal only to hurt and make worse then before stepping into that hospital. I hate them I hate them all for what they did to my child and my family.
NOW ONE SHOULD EVER STEP FOOT IN THAT HOSPITAL!!!!!!.
My son did not deserve the long term disability that this hospital caused him.
Please be aware a simple surgery can turn into a life long disability at the hand of DR at OHSU.

This is so true! I have not had medical insurance for a very long time.... for over a year I have been experiencing chronic pain because I am almost certain I have endometriosis. I have all the symptoms... it just gets worst... they refuse to give me surgery I need... When I tell them something they don't listen and discount it. Or they tell me I'm wrong, when I know I'm right and I've done the research! They told me my endo was probably just part of my recent upset stomach and i should change my diet. i know certain things cause issues so I stopped eating them with no changed. Then I thought about the fact I've been taking Niproxen for my pain... I found that was what was upsetting my stomach and I said it many times I was taking it. When I told them my IUD was giving my cysts and causing me weight gain they laughed in my face! The little sh*ts should read the information actually produced by the company!
I have no money... and If I don't get the help I need I could lose my fertility and be in this pain forever... I feel because I'm poor I have no right to proper care... I'm tired of being in pain... OHSU just makes my life worst... I would love to sue them if I could!

leave Mr. Swan alone. you have no idea how old he is or his back ground. there was a time when people were told by dr's smoking was actually healthy. Many people became addicts before they knew the risks.
